Glaucoma Referral Refinement Scheme
Glaucoma Referral Refinement Scheme

With our recent implementation of Cambridge’s “Glaucoma Referral Refinement Scheme” and in partnership with Addenbrookes Hospital, patients with suspected glaucoma are preliminary assessed at our practice. We are proud to be able to offer this specialist community clinic within our professional practice environment. With our state of the art equipment, we provide a thorough glaucoma assessment for these patients. Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the UK and can go undiagnosed for many years as it is initially asymptomatic. Regular eye examinations will show very early symptoms of this life changing disease. If recognised in its early stages, glaucoma can be easily stabilised.

Independent Prescribing (IP)
Independent Prescribing (IP)

We are now the first and only practice in Cambridge to be able to clinically assess a patient to establish a diagnosis and determine the care level required. We can also prescribe medication to treat conditions that are eye related. For more information about our range of prescribing services, please contact the practice.

Macular Degeneration Assessment
Macular Degeneration Assessment

This disease affects the most central part of the retina, the area used for detailed and colour vision. Using a retinal camera and by completing a thorough assessment of the retina, we can assess the health of this vital area. This condition is a major cause of visual impairment in people over the age of 50 and although peripheral vision often remains unaffected, the loss of vision in the centre of the retina can make it difficult to carry out everyday tasks. This disease alone will not lead to total blindness but can make activities such as reading or driving impossible. We can screen for this disease at Taank Optometrists and will be able to offer rehabilitative advice for patients who are diagnosed with macular degeneration. Naturally occurring antioxidants are required to keep the macula healthy and these are found in brightly coloured vegetables and certain types of fish. A dietary supplement may be recommended if necessary.

Dry Eye Assessment
Dry Eye Assessment

Dry Eye is caused by an insufficient volume of tears which produces symptoms of blurred vision and discomfort. In addition to being uncomfortable, this condition can cause damage to the front surface of the eye. It is often a chronic condition and can be relieved with the use of eye drops or other treatment options. We will try to ascertain the cause of the problem first, to enable us to accurately suggest a method of treatment which may include holistic eyelid care and eyelid hygiene. The most popular Dry Eye treatment however is eye therapy, with treatments including artificial tear drops and supplements. If you are experiencing any problems, please contact us and we will try to find a suitable solution to the discomfort.

Our specialist range of sports eyewear gives high standards in protection and comfort, while helping you achieve optimum sporting performance. Choose from swimming and squash goggles, diving masks, high performance ski sunglasses and many other sports eyewear products including those for children.

The uvex collection covers the sport spectacles segment including a selection of children’s sport spectacles, sport spectacles that can be glazed with correction lenses, and lifestyle sunglasses.

Many of our sports products can be combined with prescription lenses to provide clear vision in a range of demanding environments. Rodenstock sport lenses in particular are designed to work within the curved frames of wraparound cycling and squash frame styles and in ski masks. The ProAct® frame range is suitable for most sporting applications and is the professional solution for your eyes. When your sport takes you to your limits, you need to be able to rely on your equipment.

Some frames can accommodate the full prescription spectrum and also offer interchangeable lenses for varying conditions. Depending on your requirements, there are frame and lens combinations that are suitable for high impact sports such as hockey and squash – combining safety with optimum vision correction.

Near comfort lenses for medium distance vision

If you regularly use a computer and find varifocal lenses do not offer the level of vision you require for medium distance clarity, we can prescribe a tailored solution that will enhance your vision in these circumstances. The same issues can arise when reading music while performing when you need to be able to see both in the longer and medium distance.

With reading spectacles, you can only see clearly at distances of up to 40cm while our Impression Ergo FS® range of lenses provide comfort and clarity at distances of around 60cm. They provide adequately wide and sharp fields of vision in the extended close-up range. Hence, you can change smoothly and conveniently between documents, the keyboard and the screen. You can also switch effortlessly from your musical score to conductor.

At Taank Optometrists, we can fit the Ergo® near comfort lenses for fatigue-free vision through careful lens alignment within the frame to encourage natural head and body posture. We take 4 individual vision parameters into consideration and can match the lens to your personal visual requirements. It is a truly bespoke product that is ideal for those in their late 40s and 50s who may be experiencing difficulty in the mid-range.
